Natural latex rubber is derived from the rubber tree in Southeast Asia known as the Hevea Brasilienis.
The rubber is tapped from the tree like maple syrup in the northeast. It is not a man made product and not related to any polyurethane products. Natural latex rubber is used to produce mattresses, pillows and cosmetic applicators just to name a few of its uses.
The rubber while in its liquid state is whipped into a frothy type foam by simply adding air. It is then forced into specially designed aluminum molds. Depending on the firmness desired for the finished product, the molds are filled anywhere from 25 to 75 percent of their capacity. The mold is then closed and a vacuum extraction process begins which helps fill the mold in its entirety. This process also causes the cells to expand into round structures which add to its load-carrying ability.The next step involves quickly freezing the product at -4 degrees F. which causes the cells to break open in order to form an open-celled structure. The rubber is then gelled by blowing enviromentally safe C0 2 and air into the mold while raising the temperature. This keeps the cells from collapsing.
The product is then vulcanized by heating to approximately 248 degees F and then cooled again to approximately 85 degrees F. The latex block can then be easily removed from the mold and then washed to remove any loose bits of rubber. Since the foam has an open cell structure all moisture can be easily removed. Each latex core is tested by high-tech measuring devices to insure consistency, uniform firmness and quality.
